Feeding Time

Training Cups

Lily's array of training cups

When we moved Lily onto solids she took to the transition really well. Some feed times she is like a starling, opening her mouth for the next mouthful before I have time to load the spoon!

As she was doing so well on the eating side of things, I figured that she may be ready to move from the bottle onto a training cup. The choice available was a little overwhelming though. There seemed to be all manner of designs, colours, shapes and sizes. And, of course, price points.Read more

Dr Brown's Natural Flow® bottle

A Dr Brown's bottle

Conduct an internet search for 'anti-colic' bottles and one name you'll find time and time again is Dr Brown's. Designed by a physician, these bottles originate in the US and are proclaimed by many mums to have been the answer to their baby's colic problems. On such good references, and after Lily decided to reject the anti-colic Tommy Tippee bottles, I decided to give Dr Brown's a go. Like the Tommy Tippee bottles, these come with an interior vent designed to eliminate air bubbles (although Dr Brown's one is apparently patented so its is unique) and thus reduce problems like colic.

Tommy Tippee Closer To Nature Bottles

The Tommy Tippee bottle (original one used not anti-colic one)

We decided to feed Lily using Tommy Tippee bottles initially. One bottle seemed as good as any other, in truth, and as the steriliser we had been given came with a number of Tommy Tippee bottles we thought 'why not give them a go?'. I was also planning on giving Lily a combination of breast and formula milk, so these bottles seemed a good choice anyway. They are called Closer To Nature bottles because the teat is supposed to replicate the nipple, meaning baby can go from one to the other with more ease and less confusion.Read more

SMA Gold (ready mixed)

IMG_1136.JPG

When it comes to deciding what formula to give your baby (if you decide not to breastfeed or indeed opt for a combination of breast and bottle) there are various brands on the market. We started Lily on SMA Gold in the hospital and as we were using ready mixed formula there figured we would give it a go at home. She has steadily increased from the small cartons (250ml), which would last her a fair few feeds, to the litre sized cartons!Read more
