Cot Bed

Lily's lovely big cot bed

Up until she reached the six month point, Lily slept safe and sound in her swinging crib next to us in our bedroom. But with a lovely big nursery all primed and ready for her to claim as her bedroom, it came time to move her into her own space. We ummed and ahhed whether to keep Lily in her crib for a little while longer but it seemed to make sense to mark the big move with a lovely new place to sleep and as my parents had already purchased a cot bed for their granddaughter in a sale at Babies R Us (another end of the line product so at a really good price) we figured we might as well assemble it and put Lily in it in her first night in the new nursery.

When it came to upgrading from the crib, the decision as to whether to buy a cot or cot bed seemed to be a bit of a no brainer. The latter, as far as we could see, would have a longer lifespan than a simple cot as obviously the idea is that it starts off as a cot and then eventually can be turned be into your child's first bed.

The colour of this cot bed perfectly matched the light wood of other furniture already purchased for Lily and as with other cot beds, the bed allows us to lower the level of the mattress as Lily grows (ours has three positions and we have already had to move the mattress down one level) as well as take the sides down to turn the cot into a first bed. In addition, even when the cot bed has outlived its use as a bed it can be converted into a little sofa - although one would imagine a new mattress might be required by then.

One thing you do need to bear in mind when purchasing a cot bed is that few come with a mattress and this can be quite an additional expense. We opted for a mattress that was a middle of the range price point, not the cheapest and not the most expensive. Then, of course, it is important to also source appropriately sized sheets. We managed to source a twin pack of fitted sheets and for the time being this suffices.
